Subject: A Repeater on 147.555?!?
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
For several years, I've used 147.555 mHz for local FM simplex with a small
group of friends. Most of the time the frequency was clear of QRM.
But recently a _repeater_ with aparrently high coverage in the Los Angeles
area has appeared on 147.555, and QRMs our ragchews in Santa Barbara.
This repeater uses 146.535 as an input. Both 147.555 and 146.535 are listed
as FM simplex frequencies in the ARRL band plan.
This repeater's ID'er uses the callsign of W6FP.
Getting tired of the interference, I got on this repeater, and nicely
complained to one of it's control operators. He was fairly courteous;
he invited me to use the repeater, and apologized for the interference,
but did not offer to resolve the problem.
I informed the control operator that both 146.535 and 147.555 were intended
for FM simplex, under the ARRL band plan. He stated that several local ARRL
Official Observers had approved the non-standard repeater frequencies.
Do the "suggested" Band Plans have any meaning any more?! What next: FM
packet nodes on 144.200 or CW QSOs on repeater inputs?
Yes, all of the conventional 2 meter repeater pairs in Southern California
are all used up, and repeater-to-repeater interference is common. But does
every Ham have a right to have his own repeater? With our crowded,
limited VHF spectrum, I believe we all should use FM simplex or SSB
whenever possible.
Evidently, the local "co-ordinating" group for 2 meters in California, TASMA,
is having some organizational problems, and will not currently be of much
help, or so I'm informed.
Any comments or suggestions? While your area may not currently have such
problems, it may soon happen, due to the tremendous popularity of the
No-Code license.
Thanks for reading and 73 from Leigh/KM6JE in Santa Barbara.

To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
Hello!
I wonder have anyone tried to modify a GMRS - handie talkie to 70cm?
Are the radios for GMRS crystal controlled or what?
The price rate, abt $100 seems to be a right rate for a 1ch 70cm radio,
to monitor and operate a local repeater.
Please e-mail if you know anything!

Subject: Is FM 'real' amateur radio?
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
A philosophic question: Is FM amateur radio, particularly
through repeaters, too 'easy' to be considered genuine
amateur radio? IIs it necessary for a QSO to be DX to be
a genuine QSO? And, ARRL and FCC pronouncements aside,
what is the whole objective of getting into amateur radio?
I would like to hear from the Prosecution as well as from
the Defense re FM hamming, too. Thank you for your time
and thoughts. --Bill Ruth, Oberlin, Ohio (waiting for

Depends on what you want to do. Sure, repeater FM may seem too routine to
someone chasing rare DX under lousy propagation, but you may want to rag-
chew with your friend on the other side of town while mobile. The two
activities don't interfere with each other, so who cares? I myself
mostly do packet, recently posted several small picture files of the
comet hitting Jupiter. A teacher in France said he's going to use those
picture files in his science class, thanked me for posting 'em.
I see it as: "I won't pee on your tree if you don't pee on mine.".

Of course FM is real ham radio, we use FM on 10m and 6m and I have had many
good 'DX' (out of the country) contacts on 10FM.
Yes repeaters make it 'easy', so what, we use 70cm and 2m here to coordinate
lots of events, flea markets, swap fests, public service etc. Sure we could
use SSB or even packet or cw, but the preponderance is cheap FM rigs. Hey
I have built 3 repeaters, from old commercial rigs, think I learned some
things about FM, duplexers, tuning, interfacin.. you bet. That's hamming!
Some areas of the country are building amplitude compandered repeaters, good
for them! Maybe someday some one will ask if AC is 'real' radio.
Congrats on waiting for your ticket..keep asking questions.. I've been a ham
for 15 years and keep finding neat stuff to do. Like co-founding the local
club, teaching classes, being a VE, building repeaters and linking them.. is
that 'real' hamming? The mode AND the license class just don't matter. What
matters is having fun, learning, trying, experimenting.. without that there
will be no amateur radio.
ALways keep the fun in ham radio! Don't waste times on politics, code vs
no code, seek your level and have a blast!

I heard that they succeeded yesterday in docking. Astronauts were down to
their last 3 weeks of supplies. If the docking failed, they would have needed
to come back to earth. How (?) , I don't know.

I need this as I am helping in a local antenna case, I need to

I got my license in March, 1979 and Elmer was pretty strongly entrenched
by then. It was so much a part of my initial exposure to ham radio
that I have always assumed Elmer-ing was one of the grandest of ham
traditions. I'm surprised (disappointed?) to find out that Elmer is
such a young guy. ;-)

My guess is that is a material that absorbs the microwave energy better than
pizza, so it gets hotter on the bottom and browns the pizza.
PS, for fun, put a big chunk of graphite (such as a carbon arc rod) in a
microwave and fire it up. Don't let your wife see you do it. I'm not

I first saw the term in the 1980 ARRL handbook ... it doesn't get used in vk
(or over here as far as I understand). Until I'd read some postings about it
recently, I'd always thought that it was an *old* amateur radio term ... of
similar ilk as "old man".

As a ham radio flea market "junkie" I am always interested in exchanging
information about good places to go. I am interested in knowing your
favorites - judged from the quality of stuff, friendliness of vendors,
lack of non-related junk, low prices, nice venue, etc,
My nomination is The Hosstraders Tailgate swapfest held in May and
October at the Rochester NH Fairgrounds - this time is October 7th and
8th. This flea market used to be held at the Deerfield NH Fairgrounds
for many years (and in fact the event is still referred to as
"Deerfield") and has consistently been a great place to buy, sell and
trade electronic stuff. The original Hosstraders, Norm WA1IVB, Joe K1RQG
and Bob W1WGU are still running the show with all profits going to the
Shriners Hospital Burns Unit in Boston. Gates open at 9:00 AM on Friday
October 7th and you'll have to pay $20.00 until 3PM when the admission
drops to $5.00. The festivities go on well into the wee hours with
parties, music and lots of fun, stuff and socializing. There are a few
great parties on site and everybody's welcome. I have attended fleas all
over the country and the Hosstraders parties are without question the
best. AM enthusiasts are plentiful and the dean of Yay-em, Tim WA1HLR is
always in attendance. Go get there take I-95 North to Portsmouth, then
the (Captain) Spaulding Turnpike (RT-16) to Exit 13 - turn right and
follow the traffic to the Fairgrounds.
I'd be very interested in hearing about other hamfests, flea markets, etc
that are good by the same criteria.
